Fight for West Meon Post Office ongoing4.31.49pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 15th Jan 2008
Liz Leffman, Prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Meon Valley, has vowed not to stop fighting for West Meon (Village Stores) Post Office to be given back full post office status. Despite a highly popular campaign run by Liz and her Lib Dem team in West Meon - which included in-house and online petitions, flyers and visiting staff and customers - the Post Office decided to proceed with their threat of reducing West Meon to a lesser 'outreach' service. However, Liz is determined to keep up the pressure on the Post Office to back down and correct its mistake. Liz said: "The Post Office made this decision on old data before the opening of the new village community shop and post office, which has been a huge success. "It is so obvious to everyone concerned that the wrong decision has been made, so it is my duty to keep reminding the Post Office Network of this and hope for a U-turn." NOTES: The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a fully-funded plan to save the post office and give it a long-term future. The plan includes: • £2 billion invested in the post office network • New branches opening where needed • Government services continuing to be available at the post office • Freeing the post office from Royal Mail restrictions to let it develop new business • A new legal requirement for the Government to maintain the local post office network
