Liz Leffman, Prospective MP for Meon Valley, and Cllr Sam Payne, have been collecting signatures from residents in Horndean and Clanfield who live alongside the A3, and are fed up with the noise from the road.
Liz and Sam decided to start the petition in response to an approach from local resident Reg Clarke. He told them that the noise from traffic is getting steadily worse as the number of cars on the road increases, and asked for their help in getting something done about it.
Government noise maps published by Defra show that the noise level from the A3 as it passes London Road can be as high as 75 decibels, putting the area into the top two bands for noise nationally. Trees that grow between London Road and the motorway provide little protection from traffic noise.
The Highways Agency have said that they are intending to re-surface the road further down the A3M towards Portsmouth, and renew white lines and cats-eyes on the stretch close to London Road, but that they have no plans at the present time to lay a quiet road surface, even though this is a residential area. Although the money is available for a sound barrier, they have recently shelved plans, and Liz and Sam want them to look again at the proposals.
"The Highways Agency has been very slow to recognise the problems that exist for residents along London Road" said Liz Leffman. "Noise levels are unacceptable. If the money is available to make improvements, we cannot see why work should not be done."
Cllr Sam Payne said "Residents have been suffering for years and with the building of extra houses and the opening of the Hindhead tunnel it's only going to get worse. This is why we need to take action now"
