HCC backs down on Waltham Chase crossing

October 20, 2008 2:08 PM

Residents of Waltham Chase were delighted when staff from Hampshire County Council agreed to review their decision not to install a road crossing on the busy B2177 near to the school in Waltham Chase.

Mark Oaten and Liz Leffman, prospective MP for Meon valley, attended a meeting with local residents at St John the Baptist primary school on Friday October 17th, where it was pointed out to HCC staff that the survey conducted by HCC did not show anything like the levels of traffic and pedestrians as one conducted by local residents.

A new survey will be undertaken in consultation with local residents and it is hoped that this will mean that a crossing will at last be installed.

"This discussion has been going on for years" Mark Oaten said "I'm delighted that HCC have agreed to have another look at the possibility of a crossing. With the increase in traffic on the main road, a crossing near to the school is very much needed"

Liz Leffman added. "The only way to cross the road safely at the moment is for people to walk all the way up to the crossroads. A crossing near to the school will make life safer for everyone, but particularly for parents with small children, and the elderly"
