Sue Fitzgerald
LIZ Leffman, prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Meon Valley, today paid tribute to the "vivacious" and "captivating" Winchester City Councillor Sue Fitzgerald, following her tragic and untimely death on Friday.
Cllr Fitzgerald, 52, who was elected to the council as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Wickham and Knowle in May this year, had spent a day in France with her husband Ted and collapsed on her return to the ferry port.
"Sue was a bright, vivacious woman, who made a huge contribution to her community, working tirelessly for people in Wickham and Knowle," Liz said.
"Everyone who met her could not fail to be captivated by her charm, energy and enthusiasm. She will be badly missed by all of us."
Amid a host of achievements in the Wickham and Meon Valley areas, which included successfully serving as the vice-chair of the Wickham Society, co-ordinating the Meon Valley Community Responders Group and running Wickham Venture Scouts for 10 years, it is the noble manner in which she threw herself wholeheartedly into helping local residents during her short period on the council which will be most fondly remembered.
Leader of the Lib Dem group on the council and personal friend, Cllr Therese Evans, added: "We are all devastated by Sue's sudden death. Not only was she my fellow ward councillor and personal friend, but she showed so much promise in her work as councillor for Wickham and Knowle.
"Although she was only elected last May, Sue was a complete natural as a local councillor and immediately settled into progressing casework on behalf of her constituents.
"Over the last 20 years, Sue has progressed so many local community projects, such as the restoration of the former Knowle Cemetery, local affordable housing and local music weeks. She will be a great loss to both Wickham and Knowle and will be much missed."
